His sound, influenced by many genres, is a mixture of Jeff Buckley and Chris Cornell. “Songwriting is such a release for me, even writing in general. It’s like the exact energy that you feel when you’re writing is translated into the song.” Kevin plays guitar, bass, drums and keys on his recordings, as well as mixing and mastering them, making him an extremely independent artist. Even while preparing for his release and tour, and being in and out of the studio, Kevin still finds a place between creativity and taking care of business. “I normally write really late at night; having a midnight coffee with a guitar in my hand is my favorite place to be.”

Marielle Bardon Rookies Teacher, Rock 101 Teacher

Marielle is an Austinite, born and raised, and she’s always doing her part to keep Austin weird. Born into a musical and artsy family, her first memories are of her harmonizing to Frank Sinatra and The Beatles in the car with her parents. At age 10, Marielle started her first band, Checker Board, and scored a couple of gigs at a hotel along with making appearances at various local open mics.

While in this band, Marielle and her band mate attended a performance camp at School of Rock Austin over the summer to help with their stage presence and meet other musical kids around their age. She quickly fell in love with the bass and performing and has been a part of School of Rock Austin ever since. She was in the program as a student for six years, performing extensively with The B Team, and then moved on to teaching in 2017. She now teaches Rookies, Rock 101 and is an Assistant Show Director.

Outside of the school, Marielle is involved in bands of various genres including folk metal and hardcore, but for her, as long as the music has a groove, she will play anything. Her other interests include ballet, sculpture, painting and fashion design/costuming. She is also pursuing an Associates Degree in Visual Arts at Austin Community College.

Vin Mott Vocal Instructor, Drum Teacher

Vin Mott has been a musician all his life. Growing up in New Jersey, Vin was involved with every musical class offered throughout middle school and high school. After high school, Vin went on to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree of Music focusing on Songwriting (class of 2011). The first time Yamal Said can remember wanting to be a part of rock and roll was when he was five years old. One day Yamal found a KISS record left at his house by one of his uncles. As he looked with amazement onto the cover, he remembers thinking to himself, "I don’t have any idea what this sounds like or even what it is, but I know I absolutely want to be a part of it." Yamal eventually convinced his parents to buy him a guitar when he was about 14. They wouldn't buy him a drum set, giving the excuse it would damage his hearing. He finally got his hands on a drum set a few years after originally asking his parents for one. He taught himself both drums and guitar by listening to artists like The Ramones, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley and imitating what they were doing.

Yamal joined a band the week he got his first kit. He has been in bands ever since. His love of rock has grown over the years and gives him a feeling of pure freedom. He has been in multiple bands and doesn’t see himself stopping anytime soon. Yamal is proud to be a part of School of Rock Austin and loves teaching his students how to play the drums, keys and guitar.

It's really exciting to see the students gain confidence with each show they perform. I also like the technical skills that are taught in a way that the students can utilize forever. They aren't dependent on sheet music.
